100 Ghz technology is now in Alpha. Go baby go! I am so ready for solid state drives over 1 terabyte and 100 ghz procs.

I feel like AI is only a few seconds away from writing itself. Plug me into the Matrix baby. This tech ride is finally getting good.

Kenny Pyatts Python Web Development

Tue - Feb 02, 2010 - 10:28 PM

If you didn't see my previous post on learning python I would start there. If you feel comfortable with python (or at least your not terrified of it) then you can start on the web stuff. I didn't explain how to setup a server or any of those things. I am using Fedora, Python 2.x, Apache, and MySQL.

Let me know if there are any typos or issues.

Kenny Pyatts Learning Python

Tue - Feb 02, 2010 - 09:53 PM

This is the beta version of my learning python tutorials. I wrote most of this in a weekend and a couple week nights to help some of the interns at my office short cut their learning process. It is largely based off the structure of Nik Silver's Perl Tutorial. If I have placed any XM Solutions references I apologize. It should be easy enough to substitute your own server setup.

I still consider this beta so if you find any typos let me know.

It is also important to note that I originally did this in wiki text and then copy pasted it into OpenOffice.org. I haven't formatted it at all so hopefully there are no weird issues from the copy/paste. I will be posting my web version as soon as I can copy paste it :-)

Learning to program

Mon - Jan 18, 2010 - 09:44 PM

It seems like there has been a pretty awesome surge of people in my life that want to learn to program. The fun thing in my opinion is the different level backgrounds they have. I have nearly "finished" programmers (at least finished learning the basics) that want to go the next level. All the way down to the "I walked through the computer book isle once" programmers. I just set my limit at 10 people that I can teach at one time. I am working on a web based course to walk people through. It will be free as long as I can afford to host it.

I guess this is sorta of a teaser. I have 3 lessons written already. The goal is 10 for rev 1. I would really like some of my friends that are a little more seasoned to give feedback when I am finished.

EDIT:
I added some basic tutorials to the beginning to hopefully speed up the learning curve a bit more. That brings me to 18 total lessons. I have 16 of them finished and I've asked one of my team members to run through them and check for syntax errors, confusing spots, etc. He will wrap that up this week. Hopefully I will have my beta done so I can post a link this week.

Desktop Security

Sat - Jan 16, 2010 - 08:36 AM

I don't condone file sharing (especially not on my public blog). But I do strongly encourage having some basic desktop security in place.

At a minimum, I recommend a hardware firewall, software firewall, antivirus software, and if you file share I suggest a peer blocking service.

I have to say that your behavior online can quickly trump the best security setup. My lawyer also told me to include a disclaimer that I make no promises at all.

Hardware Firewall

For the hardware firewall there are several brands you could choose. I like certain Linksys models and Netgear. I install DD-WRT on every router I own but that is probably to difficult for the average reader.

Software Firewall

In most cases your OS has a firewall that is adequate for this situation. Enable it!

Antivirus software

I personally don't download viruses. But unfortunately a lot of my readers trust people online and they do. I also have a funny story of my wife downloading a virus on my personal desktop. Now I run a virus software package. I personally use the free version of AVG. They will try to get you to buy it. You can if you want. Probably a good idea. I haven't bought it because I don't install viruses.

Peer Blocking

If you file share install PeerBlock and run it when you file share. It isn't perfect mind you. File sharing is still illegal. It also blocks the updates for AVG so you can't run it 24/7 if you want up-to-date virus software.

If you are going to file share I recommend doing it in bursts. They look for heavy bandwidth usage. They work Monday - Friday, 7am to 8pm (remember time zones). If you file share I wouldn't do it when they are working.

Firefox + Ad BlockPlus

This is a free suggestion to make your browsing a lot cleaner. Drop the ads on 90% of the sites you visit.
